VAIPHEI LAMKAI MASATE
(I hemil thei diam uh)
To look back on the good old days of our grandfathers and their old country is not only interesting, but also nostalgic. However, the amusing anecdotes about them are incomplete and incoherent. I have a passion for history and started to delve into my father’s distant past and beyond. But, convincing evidence of the old stories is extremely rare and difficult. Some scholars and writers have made efforts, but the history of this peripatetic people remains undistinguished, incipient and unproven.
Satinthawng : In about 1850, Satinthawng of Vaitunsun village near Aizawl had four brothers and only one sister. He and hisfriends went to buy salt. After some day, their younger brothers went to meet them on the way. When they were passing through the forest a tiger came and killed Satinthong’s youngest brother. When they met with their brothers Satinthawng enquired about his brother. The boys told him about the incident. Satinthawng immediately left his luggage and chased after the tiger. He shot the tiger dead and brought its head. The fangs of the tiger were displayed as trophy which was worn as a garland by his granddaughter, Mrs, Zokhawniang, the mother of Sub. Onzakham, till her death.
He had a very beautiful sister who was a good singer too. While working in their paddy field, she would sing. One day, a tiger came from the nearby forest and took her away. The people working in the paddy field tried their best to rescue her, but they could not. They called Satinthawng immediately. He took his gun and chased after the tiger. But the tiger had already killed her, and had torn her garments apart. He covered her with his shawlin tears. The tiger immediately attacked him, but he shot it dead, and took its head and displayed the skull with the protruding fangs as a trophy of his feat.
Lamzamang had two sons: Hauzasing (father of Mangtin and grandfather of Rev. Singzakham ) and his younger brother, Thangzakul (father of Liankhawthang and grandfather of Kulzadal, the Ex-President of the erstwhile V.N.O, now V.P.C). When Vaiphei people migrated to Manipur and settled down at Thuangcham, Kangkap, Teikawt, and Mualnuam, Lamzamang’s family were retained by their chief, Hautinkhup as his two sons were the strongest menof their village. In a feast Hauzasing sang a song of melancholy. The chief Hautinkhup inquired if he would migrate to Manipur. He denied, and said that if he migrates he would be punished by a tiger.
In spite of his vow, he migrated to Mualnuam village, Tuivai area in Manipur, and settled at Thuangcham village. One day, as some girlsof the village went to draw water, a girl, Lamnem’s younger sister (who is related to Kaikap, Leisang village) was caught by a tiger. The mother of the girl chased after the tiger. But the tiger refused to release her. When Pahem, the husband of Haukim (Sawngtinlam’s grandfather’s aunt) saw the panic he chased after the tigeraudaciously. He snatched the girl from the tiger. But, the tiger pursued them and unfortunately the girl had died by the time. The tiger pursued them upto their house, and tried to take out the dead. They were disturbedby the menacing tiger throughout the night. Hauzasing and Thangzakul guarded their house. The tiger avoided the two brothers and tried to attack others. However, at dawn, Thangzakul shot dead the tiger. They saved their village from the dreaded danger, and earned huge public admiration.
Hauzasing, and hisfriends, father of Siakkhai and Henkhai (father of Sawigen and grandfather of Lumkhothang) went for hunting in Tuima river area. Hauzasing shot a boar, but they could not catch it as the wounded boar managed to escape. They wanted the meat for dinnerand chased after the animal. The wounded boar was also stalked by a tiger. They knew that it would be dangerous. But, Hauzasing was not willing to yield to the threat of the tiger. They continued to chase the animal, but the tiger was faster than them. Hauzasing met the tiger suddenly. When he leaned against a dried bamboo, the bamboo broke and he fell down. The tiger attacked him. But he caught the tiger and held it by its two ears. He asked his friends to kill it. However, his friends had all ran away. He broke the neck of the tiger. But the tiger had bitten his hand and head. He left the tiger and came to their camp. His friends carried him to their village the same night. But unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries and died before dawn. All men of the village went out the next day to kill the tiger, but it had died by then.

Two thousand young men from Manipur left Imphal for France towards Dimapur on foot. There was no motorable road between Imphal and Dimapur. They went for about a week under the leadership of Captain and Rev. William Pettigrew. They had worked in France, Italy, Mesopotamia, Suez Canal, Sinai and Palestinearea. The British deployed more than 15 lakh Indian soldiers and Labour Corps. 74000 Indian soldiers were killed and more than 96000 were wounded. When the Vaiphei young men had seen European cities and their civilization, their attitude had changed. They were impressed with their civilization and education. The tidiness of the European cities, advancement of the civilization there and the decency and etiquettes of the girls who warmly welcome them as a token of their appreciation of their heroic sacrifices had lastingimpact on them.

After two decades of the First World War, the Second World Warbroke out on 3rd September, 1939. The war had immediately shattered British and Russian Empires. The names of these indelible battle fields were chanted in the folklore of the world. Japanese war planes had dropped more than 50 bombs on Churachandpur Mission Compound alone. The scenes of such horrors in the war were a nightmare and the sight of the wounded and dead soldiers hurt the sentiments of the whole humanity.

Thangkai and Lungpau went to Sinzawl in Lushai Hills to buy rice from a Government distribution in 1907.
